String descriptor read error on startup

I am running Warty final. When I reboot and the process reaches the
Common Unix Printing system section, I get repeated lines of something
that reads like

usb 2-1.2: string descriptor read error: 110

The boot process reels out eight or ten lines of this before finally
taking off again, and it slows the process down a LOT.

Can somebody tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

Possibly related, I plugged my Tungsten T3 cradle into the usb port and
tried to set it up but there is no connection between the handheld and
the desktop. I have never gotten the Evolution pilot module to work on
any distro of Linux I have ever used, period. Any ideas about what's
going wrong here?
