I use /dev/ttyUSB0 as device, and it works with that. Unless when I plug
in another USB device, when it might be ttyUSB2.

I really think this could be easier. With udev, it's supposedly not
difficult to make a palm /dev/pilot by default. However, I'm no udev
expert.
