Truthfully it's a bit hard to tell, so much of what a desktop does is
waiting for input from you or a disk or a network that the raw speed of
computation isn't all that important. The 64bit version should be slightly
faster, more so on things that actually do lots of maths (e.g. gimp
filters).

There are indeed, although some things seem to work fine. Ubuntu/Debian
don't yet have as seamless 32bit compatibility as, say, Fedora, but they
are working on it.

I'd say it's worth it, but I don't mind breaking a few things to take
advantage of my new system ;)

There aren't any good gnome ones. k3b seems to be pretty decent, but it
will need KDE libraries installed.
