Permission problem - new install

I've just installed Ubuntu but am unable to login to a successful X session.  The latest error message is showing as 

'could not set mode 0700 on private per user gnome configuration directory /home/s.../.gnome2_private   Operation not permitted'

The only session I can log into is the failsafe terminal.

Can someone suggest what I need to do here please?
