aptitude command line - why?

I don't want to put words into the developers' mouths, but I think it
was chosen because they prefer to provide GUI software where they can
(I would swear I remember reading this somewhere on the Ubuntu site,
but now I can't find it).  Synaptic is the best GTK GUI for apt
available, so it's included.

But maybe I'm way off the mark.
