nvidia slower?

Hi all,

I just installed ubuntu and i have to say it looks great.

I was very pleased with the package manager.  You even had nvidia binary
modules in the mix.

However, after installing the nvidia module and configuring my system, I
ran glxgears, and i noticed that it's running about 300 fps slower than
the offical nvidia package on slackware.  I thought perhaps gnome was
slowing things down so I went to console and did: startx -exec xterm, and
started glxgears from there but it was no faster.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the fastest fps
possible (I like to play america's army) under ubuntu?

Would I see an improvement if I installed the kernel sources and installed
the offical packages the old fashon way?
