gedit not able to save - character encoding problem

i exit thunderbird,
open an existing thunderbird mailbox file in gedit
and paste the text there.
when i the try to save, i get the error message.

now i realise there is another problem with
gedit often erasing the clipboard content.
i did not find out under what circumstances yet.
for example i copy something in firefox,
paste it without problems in firefox,
go to gedit, paste, and nothing happens,
i go back to firefox, and see that the paste menu is greyed out.
