I tend to agree with you but someone needs to get the work done somehow.
There are several ideas floating around my head but right now my first
target is to get X.org out of the door. If you have a simple
implementation of such a tool, perhaps starting with video card change
detection. why don't you publish it or coordinate the development of it
inside our community?

I won't mind including it in the next release and it should be
relatively simple to code. Probably all you need is a lspci or lshw
wrapper with a init.d script that checks the hardware at boot time.

Just keep in mind that we need to be compatible with architectures other
than i386, so you need to figure out how to gather the same information.
