gedit not able to save - character encoding problem

you are right:
http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2004-October.txt.gz
is in UTF-8, and gedit tried to save it as ISO-8859-1
i think gedit should not only give the error message and refuse,
it should point to the possibility of save-as and other encoding,
as you did.
could it happen with other data that no fitting encoding could be found
so that it is impossible to save using gedit ?
