I have some not so fond memories of getting on my bike and riding

/usr/local/bin would be a better place for a local package installation.

I think that when hoary development starts it's very likely to be
massively borked for a while. Large differences in libary versions might
make the use of binaries from hoary difficult.
It will be possible to backport packages by getting the source packages
from hoary and building them on your current system.
I am sure once hoary development starts at least one repository of
backports will be quickly available.
