oops! yep - i put the wrong switch: 

mount -t iso9660 -o loop <iso path> <folder to mout to>

as for the efficiency - its a very good question...

.... and one i have no idea about the answer to in terms of user efficiency. 
The main reason it is recommended I think is that rsync is much more
processor intensive at the server side, so jigdo is used to ease the
load on the servers. The other reason is that rsync is blocked by most
strict firewalls so If you wanted to ge the latest updates over your
work connection you would need to reconfigure the firewall to allow
it, whereas jigdo uses http or ftp - allowed by just about any network
;)
