ltmodem on Toshiba 2100CDT

I'm trying to enable the modem on my Toshiba 2100CDT laptop.  The modem
is a Lucent Microelectronics 56k WinModem.  I've downloaded and compiled
the lt_modem and lt_serial drivers in several different versions.  When
I load the lt_serial driver it segfaults.  Attached is the output of
dmesg.  The kernel is 2.6.8.1-3-386

Others have coaxed this modem to work under different distributions.
It's unfortunate that we have to solve these same problems over and
over.
