You mean /usr/local/bin, with links to the actual programs elsewhere,
yes? It was the PATH that was (mostly?) needing to be set in the OP's
scenario, I think. And to gild the lily, the other environment vars
could be set so as not to override existing ones in case an advanced
user wants to alter them, where that makes sense.
