using vino/vncviewer

I found this post quite interesting, but I am having a problem not directly related (I think). I have Ubuntu up and running can log in to a terminal as root, but need VNC access or something else to get to the GUI.

How can I do that taking into consideration that I have no direct access to the server. It is installed in the garage, no screen etc?
