Problems with audio

OK.  One correction after I fiddled some more with this problem.
Setting the preferences for both Default Sink and Default Source to ALSA
in the 'gstreamer-properties' dialog allows me to listen to a music CD,
but still no luck with the WAV or MP3 files (same thundering noise
coming out of the speakers).  

I also find it interesting that, having the 'gstreamer-properties' set
to ALSA, the control that works for the CD volume in the Volume Control
applet is the one under the tab labeled "Analog Devices AD1881 [OSS
Mixer]".  How come it's not the tab labeled "VIA 82C686A/B rev20 [Alsa
Mixer]" that controls the volume for the CD?
