Problems with audio

Hi,

I have a system (an SGI 330 Visual Workstation, see more information in
link below) with an integrated via686a sound card, and am experiencing
some problems getting it to work under Ubuntu. No matter what I select
in the 'gstreamer-properties' application (Alsa, OSS or ESD), testing
either the Default Sink or the Default Source only ends in some weird
thundering/thumping noise until I choose to end the test. At that
point, either it hangs for a while until it finally exits or it does
exit but the noise continues to come out through the speakers until I
kill the 'esd' process (this only happens when I select ESD in the
'gstreamer-properties' dialog).

Now, playing any type of sound, be it a WAV file, an MP3 or music from a
CD totally fails. In some cases I get the above mentioned sort of
thundering noise, and some other times (especially with the CD) I just
get silence.

Here is some more information about the kernel modules currently loaded:

$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_via82xx 26660 3
snd_ac97_codec 59268 1 snd_via82xx

snd_pcm 85540 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 23172 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11144 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
gameport 4736 1 snd_via82xx
snd_mpu401_uart 7296 1 snd_via82xx
snd_rawmidi 23232 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 7944 1 snd_rawmidi
snd 50660 11
snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
soundcore 9824 3 snd

Any suggestions?
