Neither is "check your logs" - unless you're staring 24x7 at the log 
files, and can type as fast as Tsutomu Shimomura! By default, logcheck 
emails summaries once an hour (as I'm sure you know, I'm talking to a 
wider audience here). These are useful enough to tell you what services 
are being probed, and to allow you to check their config and close them 
down/tighten them up.
