pppd stops communicating with modem on ttyS1after a minute or two

Hi,
I'm trying to use a dialup connection with Ubuntu.
I can connect to my ISP as normal, but then I get a failure of the
connection after three to eight minutes.
In /var/log/messages I find the following lines from pppd;
No response to 4 echo requests.
Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Connection terminated.
Hardware is probably ok, as it worked fine under both Windows 95 and Suse
9. (It is a rather elderly 200Mhz
Cyrix based machine though, so it isn't absolutely beyond suspicion.) The
modem is an ancient ISApnp device
but has been fine under all previous systems.
The problem appears to be in whatever handles communication between the
pppd process and ttyS1
where the modem is situated. The timeout is variable, mainly around four
minutes or so, and doesn't
seem to be influenced by data volume.
The installed Ubuntu is basically sounder 9 with wvdial and wvstreams added
from the repository a few days
ago and the gnome-system-tools also updated.
Any ideas where I should look next? How do I test this connection? Should
I just wait for the release version?
(I already have a more modern PIII machine on the way to me if the problem
is to do with the Cyrix processor.)
Neil
