OpenOffice and MS Office 2003 XML

The version of OpenOffice that is included with Ubuntu does not seem
to be able to open MS Office 2003 XML files.  However the latest
version of OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org for windows is able to
open the MS Office 2003 XML files.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to add this ability to the
OpenOffice provided in Ubuntu.  This seems to be probably the best way
currently to share documents between Office 2003 and OpenOffice and it
is a little disappointing that Ubuntu does not take advantage of it.
