| Thanks much for the note and the help. Unfortunately, I reinstalled
| Windows XP on the Gateway and will install Ubuntu on a more standard
| Dell machine in the next few days.
|
| I did look at the X server config file, /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and at
| /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
|
| The issue in the log was "no video BIOS modes for chosen depth"
| followed by "no screens found."
Oh too bad! that was easy to fix :( If it is one of these integrated
video card/mobo combination you need to be sure of the following:
Allocate from the mobo BIOS enough ram to the card.
Tell X exactly how much RAM you allocated to the card.
And in case lower the value for the default bits from 24 to 16.
Other than the first step that needs to be done at boot time, you can do
the other changes using sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.
| I did change from the driver from
| "i810" to "vesa" since there were some postings about this but this
| did not fix the problem. Again sorry I don't have the full log or
| config file and thanks again for your willingness to help.
I am sorry to hear you had to remove Ubuntu from that box. But if you
change your mind and want to try again. let me know in advance and we
can fix the problem together.

<fajita> Whatever the problem, step one is always to look in the error log.
<user> fajita: step two
<fajita> When in danger or in doubt, step two is to scream and shout.
