If you overwrite this -- you should also be using dpkg-divert to make
sure a newer ubuntu-artwork package doesn't overwrite your file, or
use

gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set
"/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image"
"/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png"

This will change the default splash image to
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png in a way which is mandatory
for all users (from
