Installation of Debian is hardly a problem, assuming you are going to
install Sarge that has almost the same installer as Ubuntu - what's more
problematic is that
1) You'll probably have to keep running the same desktop for 2 years.
Trust me, the software in Sarge is going to be really old 2 years from
now. Unless you are going to run testing/unstable, which is going to
break every few weeks. I know, that's what I've been mostly running.
2) The community has a completely different attitude. Try hanging out on
#debian for a while. Especially newbies are going to be flamed, hard,
and without much provocation.
Abandoning Ubuntu because of this theme controversy is throwing baby out
with the bathwater. I'm sure that if Canonical is going to see this
through, there are going to be more conservative ISO images available as
torrents.
Of course one could think that serving some time with Debian would be
good for everybody, but it's definitely going to eat more of your
freetime.
