The wallpaper never really was the default and I like how it's done. The
calender feature is a very nice touch.

I'd also prefer a somewhat toned down version of the GDM theme. Your
mockup looks "disabled" though, maybe a monochrome version would be more
subtile, similar to the calender wallpaper. I don't think that this
would calm the critiques however. Personally I don't care and I like the
artwork, it would be a real shame to see this effort going to waste.
Yes, it would obviously make Ubuntu lose a few potential users, but
maybe also gain a few new ones? :) In any case Ubuntu will have a large
userbase, whatever the final decision of Canonical will be. Also I got
the impression that Ubuntu is primarily made for people, not for
corporations...

As long as the splash can't be changed easily, it would probably be a
good idea to set it to something very generic. I'd be a little bit sad
to see it go, but then again, the splash screen is really insignificant
and I wouldn't really care either way (in fact, if there'd be an option,
I'd probably disable the splash screen completely).

What I like the most about the artwork is probably what others like the
least about it: It's completely unexpected. :)
