ATI and ubuntu

Hey,
I have the ati 9600xt and can not get it working with 3d, I have been
trying for days to get this to work I have followed both:

and

both with no errors, everything installs like a dream, but still
fglrxinfo gives opengl render: mesa

I am at my wits end, any help would be appreciated
