Ubuntu and AMD64

Hi
I just installed Ubuntu last night on an AMD64 machine to replace Fedora
Core 2.
I had an issue with the installer throwing a libparted error about not
understanding an ext2 filesystem of mine (I think it was the 160gb /data
partition I'd carried over from the last install), but after pressing on
anyway it all seems fine.
I haven't had much of a chance to play with it, but I'm wondering what the
support for 32bit apps is like. Fedora seemed very good out of the box,
but ultimately I could find quite a few ways of making it not be usefully
32bit compatibly. As I understand it Debian has almost no 32bit
compatibility, so I assume Ubuntu is the same and I will need a 32bit
chroot install, but I wanted to check, since I haven't found any
ubuntu/amd64 notes that cover the subject.
Since everyone else is talking about the theme, I'll throw in that I found
the startup and gnome sounds infinitely more offensive than some skin on
my background ;-)
Cheers,
