Thanks to all who replied.

I didn't realize the Gimp would do screenshots, but I really was looking
for an app that would let me do a user defined region, as well as an
active window or whole screen.

I know at one time Gkrellm had a screenshooter plugin that would let one
do any of these, but I really didn't want to run Gkrellm just to have
that feature.

Of those listed in Chris' reply, only ksnapshot will let me do what I'm
looking for. 

So I guess that's what I'll use for now, unless someone knows of a
better app that will do it.
