I would first suggest you boot into Knoppix, verify the mouse is working as it should, then look at either your Knoppix XF86Config or XF86Config-4 mouse sections and then duplicate them in your Ubuntu install.  Of course, make sure you edit other places in your config files that reference the identifier and driver if necessary.
