This is not related to GNOME, but is related to the all-in-one chip on the
board that handles both power-management and mouse/keyboard handling.

The cause (as you located before) is down to the chip getting confused every
time the chip is queried by the battery applet.  A solution is to append:

  i8042.nomux=1

to the kernel parameters.
