Exactly! The problem with art for this sort of use is that even
mediocre art carries a freight of meanings. Nor will all the meanings
that fairly reasonable people are going to see in them be the ones you
guys intended. And that's the problem.
Personally I think the photos are a bit mawkish, but not objectionable.
(besides, in my normal use I see the login splash, oh, maybe once a month
on average unless I'm doing something unusual - I'm typing this in an
xterm that was started by .xsession on September 3rd <grin>) However, I
know too well that some would take exception to them, so I can't see
promoting Ubuntu to co-workers or students with the RC's default login
and splash. As long as its only old installs that are getting the
monthly surprise without intentionally requesting it that's not much of
an issue; you might make it even less of an issue by packaging the
monthly backgrounds separately from the uncontroversial artwork that's
required to have a working system.
