bootsplash???

I agree with you. A bootsplash would be really nice, especially to
please the newbie.
I patched the kernel manually, and tried to make it work, but I would
never have a splash showing up... I didn't push too much though.

you can try 'apt-cache search bootsplash'. One answer will be
kernel-patch-bootsplash, and you have tons of themes along with them.
