A couple of things:

1. Grub menu comes up. I am usin g a fresh install of the image stated
above on my test machine, after removing a previous Ubuntu installation,
that with all the updates, didn't show this behavior. My laptop also has
the latest updates with no change.

When the kernel is loading, I get the following message:
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 0000:00:1f.3 which
turns out to be my SMBus controller.

I also get error messages during boot about the spchp module not being
loaded. I know my system doesn't suppor this module, but these error
messages didn't come up during the bootup previously. These come up
after the starting hotplug message.

The motherboard is an Asus P4PE, with a P4 2.4Ghz processor.
