i wonder if the choices were sort of test to see what 
kind of response would come of it and it seems to have worked.

I am not personally opposed to the graphics used in the new
theme. From a global perspective, I would not have chosen to
use them.

Since there are cultures that would have personal issues with
the content of the graphics, and the graphics in question are
not necessarily required for the enhancement of the OS, it
would be more logical to use another set of graphics that have
a truly universal appeal.

While rather plain and simple, the background with just the
Ubuntu logo would be most appropriate to appeal to the widest
possible audience.
