Info on kernel choice

It's the CPU family.
386 - basic x86 compatible, 386 and upwards, so will run on any PC
compatible
686 - Pentium Pro/II and above (i.e. not 386, 486 or original Pentium)
K7 - AMD Athlon/Duron
smp versions are for multi-processor machines

linux-686 is optimal (don't think there are any pre-686 cpu's branded
Celeron - someone correct me if I'm wrong!), though of course 386 will work.
(BTW it's not a "Pentium Celeron" - the two are mutually exclusive. I
assume you mean "Intel Celeron" - Pentium and Celeron are two brand
names used by Intel - Pentium for higher end and Celeron for budget
CPUs. In the same way Athlon and Duron (now being replaced by Sempron)
are higher end and budget AMD processors.
