Suggestions on packages to add to Ubuntu "main"

I suggested all the kernel source, etc because some drivers (hsfmodem,
in my experience) need kernel source to install. I suggested Captive
because it is a special NTFS driver (separate from the built-in Linux
NTFS driver - which is already included) that uses Windows drivers on
the partition to offer safe read and write support. I suggested
Thunderbird, a better pdf program, and CD burning software just to make
the desktop experience better.
For the person who couldn't get read-only NTFS working, just:
1) create a directory to serve as the mount point (like /windows)
2) edit /etc/fstab to mount the partition there (follow the ngeneral
pattern seen in that file, but put
the device name of your Windows partition (like /dev/hda1) and ntfs as
the filesystem. Also put umask=000 in the options.
3) execute sudo mount /windows if you want to use the partition before
rebooting
