New user issues

Let me start off with a great thanks to the Ubuntu-team! Works wonders!
Next an extremely short introduction; I have been a Debian user for
years, but have not been active since version 2.2 (stuff works, why
bother...). Recently I was looking around for a new desktop and came
across Ubuntu. Great!

While installing I ran into a few minor issues which I could not solve.

Installation on VMWare 4.5:

This worked well since the upgrade from 4.0. Only issue regards the
installation of the VMWare tools. This requires the kernel headers. I
tried to get those with Synaptics but they do not seem to match the
  current kernel (according to VMWare):

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.8.1-3-386) does not match
  your running kernel (version 2.6.8.1-2-386)

Not sure if this is a bad guess from VMWare or I got the wrong source?

Installation on Dell Latitude Cpi

Installation was a breeze. Only issues are that the power management
does not seem to work (I do see battery icon, but grey and also it
does not shut off after a power down). Not sure if I need a recompile
of the kernel. If so, is there a good RTFM? I am a little unsure in
  this area.
Also, my wireless PCMCIA (Asus WL-100g) does not seem to work. I have
little clue how to do this in Linux (last time I have logged in as
root was long before these technologies were common ;-))

Thanks a lot for any hints or suggestions!
