You should think of hacking your modem in to a pro version. Then you have
a NAT firewall, dhcp server and it will just take one mouse click to
connect to the internet from any os. However as you're behind a nat
firewall playing networked games and filesharing, also audio on Windows
Messenger is not possible however Yahoo and Skype audio conferencing work
behind the nat. You will need to open manually open the ports for your
applications and forward them to what ever PC.

If you are going to do it then check out first this forum to see what
possibly could go wrong:

The DHCP option is cool if you want to connect multiple PC's to the modem
with minimal effort. However I learned that opening NAT ports works only
with assigned ip adresses. But if all you do is
http/ftp/email/nntp/internet radio (anything that your pc "pulls" from the
internet will work) you don't need open ports. I closed mine as I was
getting all kinds of weird traffic. So only open them when you are going
to use them.

Notice: You can revert back to the original state. Just look for it on the
links I posted. I recommend downloading the pages onto your hard drive
that guide you in hacking into a pro and reverting into a home.
