I think you probably are right, this must be some stupid bug...

The forcedeth driver is loaded correctly when booting, it's just that 
the card isn't configured, I just type ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.2 up, and 
starts working.

You'll find a lot of information regarding this 'bug' (?) right here:

Let me know any other suggestion to try.
