Thanks, Jan.

tail -f /var/log/messages does not seem to work. Nothing happens when
I push the card in or pull it out. I tried unplugging and replugging
in my USB scanner, and I got the appropriate messages. So, as
requested, the output of "dmesg", "lsusb -
vvv", "lspci -vvv", "uname -a" are all pasted below.
