Safe mode ?

I had problem with one of the PC which I install Ubuntu into, where 
Gnome started up in a resolution that the monitor can't cope.

I think I can follow the instructions here:
http://wiki.ubuntulinux.org/DebuggingXautoconfiguration

However, normal users might become confused if they encounter this.

I wonder if there's anyway we can have some sort of "safe mode" boot 
menu, where Gnome will then show up with 640x480 256 color / standard 
VGA resolution ?
Then the user can choose the correct setting themselves from the 
appropriate menu.
