Several problems

Hi:
I am trying to get ubuntu working on a 2.8 GHz P4. I have several
problems.
* Evolution Connector won't connect with an exchange server if SSL
is activated. It works fine if you turn SSL off. That's ok at
work, but I can't use it from a laptop or from home. imap
servers work with ssl.
* The CD player won't work for audio applications (e.g. the CD
Player says drive error. I've attached dmesg output. It will
read data CDs.
* Sound works, but the volume mixer icon on the panel has the
slider greyed out and, although you can drag the bar, it
spontaneously returns to the bottom when you release it. When I
try to start the volume control from Applications->Multimedia, I
get a popup stating: Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices
found.
sndstat says:
