I have an X stuck on my desktop

I have tried the solution on my IBM Thinkpad suggested by Paul Sladen >>

Actually it was /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on my machine. However adding
the line caused X to fail on next reboot & I had to remove that line
so that X could start.

Was there another step I was supposed to do?
