Help getting access to the internet

Hi John,

Congratulations for thinking outside of the Micro$oft box and trying
out Linux, personally I think Ubuntu provides a great opportunity to
do just that. Once you get on your feet you'll wonder why you didn't
do it sooner ;)

Firstly since you're new to this, when asking for help about something
(be it on a mailing list, forum, friend, foe, grandma, whatever) the
more information you can provide about your situation the better.
You'll sometimes see people cutting & pasting complete configuration
files along with their email....it's not gratuitous, the more details
your provide, the more likely your problem will get solved.

That said, setting up your DSL should be a piece of cake. I'm assuming
you've got your DSL modem/router set up correctly and you can access
the net using your Windoze machine. By default, Ubuntu will try to use
DHCP to configure your ethernet adapter. Most of the time this seems
to work fine but if it doesn't you may have to specify your settings
manually, depending on your configuration.

How is your Windoze XP machine configured? Is it using DHCP also, or
have you manually specified the IP address, netmask, gateway, etc?
Also note what DNS settings you have on the Windoze XP machine.

Once you have this info, you should be able to setup the ethernet
adapter on your Ubuntu machine. To configure the network settings on
your Ubuntu machine open:

Computer > System Configuration > Networking

Under the Connections tab you should see your ethernet adapter listed.
Select it and open the Properties dialog. If you are using DHCP, then
just select DHCP and you're done. Otherwise use the same settings as
your Windoze XP machine but add 1 to the IP address....eg. if your
Windoze XP machine has IP address 192.168.0.1 then use 192.168.0.2 on
your Ubuntu machine.

Next you'll have to make sure that you've set up DNS correctly. Go
back to the Network Settings tool and look under the DNS tab.
Basically, add to DNS Servers whatever your Windoze XP machine is
using. Typically this will be the IP address of your DSL modem/router,
but this may vary depending on your situation.

Hope this helps,

nullobject
