ubunto has a fickle firebird

im having exactly the same problems.  Also, when i try to go to the
downloads menu in the preferences dialog box, firefox crashes.  and
oddly enough, when i tried to download thunderbird...and only when i
tried to download thunderbird, firefox crashed.

anyone have a clue?
