ubunto has a fickle firebird

I'm having problems with firebird crashing when using my fresh ubunto
system.  When ever I click on my gmail invite link I firefox just
dies.  It works fine using firefox on my laptop running gentoo.  The
same thing happened at this site: http://www.adidasvictorycam.de/ (my
start number was 25218 - yellow shirt, beard). On gentoo I just
allowed teh pop-up for that address and everything was ok.  In ubunto
ff crashes before the pop-up shows.  Also, I have yet to install any
extensions.

Seeing the real video at the adidas site is another thing. Is there a
.deb repository for the usual plugins.....flash, java, realplayer?
