I think you need the pwc module (modprobe pwc) - if that's available in
the ubuntu kernel. However, the one included with linux is a little bit
useless, unless you have a binary-only plugin too, or use the forked
driver.

I strongly recommend the driver available at 
http://www.saillard.org/pwc/ . Just download it, untar it, and type
make, and it should work (needs kernel headers, so the appropriate
package must be installed).

Works for me like a charm.
