Single click results in double click

I had this happen with an MS Intellimouse USB optical mouse. It turned
out to be a hardware problem - the mouse button switch got damaged in a
box when I moved house.

If you can, test it with another mouse or swap the left and right
buttons and see if it happens with both buttons. If not, it's a hardware
problem.
