strange gnome (x?) bug

Exactly the same problems occured with me.
Changing the volume with this shortcut does not
in any way affect the actual volume controls.
I am yet to find the cause of this problem (or is
it an XFree86 bug ?). Any pointers regarding this
would be appreciated.
