strange gnome (x?) bug

i don't know if this is gnome or xfree or both, but.. i have
configured keyboard shortcuts to raise and lower the volume
(multimedia keys wohoo), when i use them a neat little window pops up
to show me where the volume is at.
problem: if i have opened a menu (right click or left click or any
way) i am not able to raise or lower the volume this way, and the
window that tells me about the volume does not pop up.
i think there's something fishy going on here, some kind of conflict
between the menu "window" and the volume window. does X not allow two
at the same time? doesn't Gnome?
will someone put this in the Ubuntu bugzilla? i guess it's very
low-priority but still it's a bug. ofcourse pass it on upstream maybe?
or is this desired behaviour?
