totem not working

Sounds as if your sound device can not be accessed. Do you have a
sound card at all? Does it work with other applications like rhythmbox
(Music Player)? Can you please start 'gstreamer-properties' and see
what the default output is?

Many sound issues were resolved only recently, so you might consider
upgrading/reinstalling with the latest daily CD.
