cpu frequency scaling

Hei,
AFAIK most packages like cpudynd, cpufreqd and powernowd (powernowd is
installed on my Sony Vaio during the default Ubuntu installation) need the
cpu scaling governor stuff in "/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0" but it's empty
on my system. Do I need to recompile the kernel or is there any other option
? (I hate recompling the kernel, takes hours if you don't manually deselect
every not needed driver and that takes also hours and then you've deselected
one driver too many and have to start all over.)
Greetings Holle
